- Happiness Haiku
Recently I was doing an "ELT and the Science of Happiness" workshop for teachers. I wanted to add a task that would help them think through the basic "happiness" ideas presented in the "Happiness Dictation" and on many of the worksheets in the "10 minutes for happiness" and "More ELT & happiness tasks" areas of this website.
It occurred to me to invite them to write haiku poems about the ideas. The results were great.
Soon after that, I decided to try it with my own students. They did some great haiku as well. That task is here as a pdf.file. I hope you enjoy it.
Here's a haiku from my students that I really enjoyed (about forgiveness):
You feel bad / angry.
As there is no other choice,
Laugh loudly with your friend.
(OK, the last line is one syllable over -- but for that sentiment, I can live with it).
Another student haiku about living in the moment/noticing good things when they happen:We're always busy.
But good things are around us.
Notice special things.
About dealing with problems, then moving on:
Don't mind the bad times.
Don't regret. Just go ahead.
You will be happy.
